In 1958, an Optometrist had an idea, if everyone in his community gave just $1 to an educational fund; it would be enough to help nearly every student in the community attend college. Dr. Irving Fradking started a plan he called his plan "Dollars for Scholars." Today, this plan is a national organization called "Scholarship America" the nation's largest non-profit, private-sector scholarship and educational support organization. There are nearly 1,100 locally based, volunteer-driven chapters serving students in nearly 3,500 communities across the country.
Dollars for Scholars chapters help students in their hometown achieve their education goals by raising scholarship funds, establishing endowments, providing assistance with college readiness and financial aid process, and distributing scholarships each year.
